📍 Mexico
Coyolxauhqui is a significant archaeological and cultural site located in the heart of Ciudad de México, Mexico. It centers around the monumental stone disk depicting the Aztec goddess Coyolxauhqui, which was discovered in 1978 at the Templo Mayor, the main temple of the ancient Aztec capital, Tenochtitlán. This discovery was pivotal, as it led to extensive excavations that uncovered much of the Templo Mayor, providing deep insights into Aztec civilization.

The stone disk, measuring approximately 3.25 meters in diameter, is intricately carved and depicts the dismembered body of Coyolxauhqui, a moon goddess in Aztec mythology. According to legend, she was defeated and dismembered by her brother Huitzilopochtli, the god of war and the sun, symbolizing the victory of day over night. This myth was central to Aztec cosmology and religious practices. The site is now part of the Templo Mayor Museum, where visitors can explore the temple ruins and view the Coyolxauhqui stone along with other artifacts. The museum offers a profound glimpse into the Aztec world, showcasing the artistry, religion, and daily life of this ancient civilization. The museum's location in the historic center of Mexico City makes it an accessible and essential stop for anyone interested in pre-Columbian history and culture.
