Courthouse Butte is a broad, steep-sided red-rock formation just east of Bell Rock, near the Village of Oak Creek south of central Sedona. Within Coconino National Forest, it forms one of the area’s recognizable pairs of landmarks: Bell Rock has a tapering, rounded profile, while Courthouse Butte presents a much wider mass with a relatively level summit. Its layered cliffs record ancient sediment deposits shaped by erosion, and iron oxides give the rock its characteristic rusty color. Horizontal bands, vertical cracks, and stepped ledges break up the imposing walls, contrasting with the green juniper and scrub below. The Courthouse Butte Loop Trail passes around both formations, revealing how their silhouettes and apparent scale change as they overlap or separate along the route.
