Cotopaxi is a volcano near the city of Mejia in Ecuador. Standing at 19,347 ft. high, it is one of the highest active volcanoes in the world. Cotopaxi offers beautiful views and spectacular landscapes for travelers and photographers alike. There are two hiking trails to the summit; the first is a dusty mining road that ascends to the base of the crater, and the second is a challenging three-day hike to the summit. At the foot of the volcano, visitors can explore Lake Limpiopungo, which has a large variety of flora and fauna. At the Refugio José Rivas, visitors can enjoy bird-watching, local stories, and the view of the volcano from various points around the refuge. Visitors should also take time to check out nearby Cotopaxi National Park, located within the surrounding forest and cloud forest, featuring beautiful Andean landscapes, including striking waterfalls and lakes.
