Cortina d’Ampezzo lies in the broad Ampezzo Valley of Veneto, encircled by the pale limestone walls of the Dolomites, including the Tofane, Cristallo and Pomagagnon groups. Long associated with mountaineering and winter sports, the town hosted the 1956 Winter Olympics and events during Milano Cortina 2026, while retaining a distinct Ladin cultural identity. Its visual center is Corso Italia, where traditional façades, hotels and cafés gather around the tall bell tower of the Basilica of Saints Philip and James. From streets and meadows around town, the compact skyline appears against an unusually close amphitheater of peaks: warm evening light can turn the rock pink-orange, while winter snow sharpens its ridges and autumn larches add bands of gold.
