📍 Italy
The Ospedale degli Innocenti, located in Florence, Italy, is one of the world’s oldest and most significant Renaissance architecture complexes. It was founded in 1445 by Giovanni di Bicci de' Medici as a haven and orphanage for abandoned children, and is now home to Florence's Museum of Ancient Art. Today, the complex houses a main courtyard, the Cortile degli Uomini, which still retains its traditional medieval architecture, with unadorned sandstone arches and a robust portico. The courtyard’s elegant simplicity and slender columns are a famous part of its beauty. While there, you can take in the peaceful atmosphere that is enveloped by the surrounding college wings, which host a variety of activities, such as conferences and workshops. Across from the main courtyard, visitors can find the main entrance with a large fresco of the Virgin Mary with the Child above it. Similarly, the adjacent church of St. Maria della Visitazione hosts a masterful glasswork by a local artisan and frescoes by Italian painter, Sebastiano Ricci. Visiting this historic site makes for a truly special experience.
