📍 From E Wacker Dr, United States
Marina City’s twin cylindrical residential towers rise from the north bank of the Chicago River in River North, directly across from the Loop. Designed by Bertrand Goldberg and built in the 1960s, the mixed-use complex brought together apartments, parking, entertainment and a river-level marina as a downtown “city within a city.” Its exposed concrete and rounded forms departed from the rectilinear steel-and-glass architecture associated with Chicago’s modern skyline. The towers’ “corncob” nickname comes from their repeated semicircular balconies, which resemble rows of kernels wrapped around the buildings. Open-sided spiral parking decks occupy the lower portions, creating a visible contrast with the residential floors above. From the river and nearby bridges, the paired towers reveal scalloped silhouettes and deep balcony shadows against the straight-edged office buildings surrounding them.
