Copenhagen Cathedral is an impressive Lutheran church located in the heart of Copenhagen. It was built between 1637 and 1642 on the remains of an earlier Roman Catholic church, which was destroyed by fire in 1629. Steeped in history, Copenhagen Cathedral serves as the main site of worship and as a center of the Arts and Culture for Denmark.
Containing a combination of Baroque and Neoclassical styles, the Cathedral’s 160-meter tower stands as the tallest spire in Copenhagen. Inside the church, visitors are invited to admire the ornate interior, filled with frescos, altars and 3,000 magnificent decorations. Highlights include pulpit, choir, baroque organ and exquisite marble statues. Not only is there a museum in the church, but several murals dedicated to King Christian IV (the king who began the construction of the church). The royal Sarcophagus of Queen Sophie Amalie can also be found here. The church is open to the public for services and events throughout the year, giving all visitors a chance to explore the beauty of Copenhagen Cathedral.
