The Congresso Nacional do Brasil anchors the eastern end of Brasília’s Monumental Axis, facing Praça dos Três Poderes, where the country’s legislative, executive, and judicial institutions meet. Designed by Oscar Niemeyer and inaugurated with the capital in 1960, the complex is a defining work of Brazilian modernism. Two slender office towers rise behind contrasting sculptural forms: the upward-opening bowl of the Chamber of Deputies and the lower convex dome of the Federal Senate. Their white curves, broad ramps, strict geometry, and surrounding lawns create a striking counterpoint to Brasília’s immense horizontal scale. From the axis, the centered composition emphasizes symmetry and institutional grandeur, while the reflecting pool can add mirrored lines and shifting light to the scene.
