The Coloured Triclinium is a Nabataean rock-cut banqueting chamber in Petra’s Wadi Farasa, opposite the Tomb of the Roman Soldier. It formed part of a funerary complex, reflecting the role of shared meals in commemorating the dead. Inside, carved architectural details frame sandstone streaked with red, pink, ochre and cream: the colour belongs to the naturally banded rock rather than a painted mural. The contrast between orderly carving and flowing mineral patterns makes the interior distinctive, revealing how Petra’s builders worked with both the structure and appearance of the sandstone.
