Colosseum (also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre) is a massive stone amphitheater located in the heart of Rome, Italy. It is one of the most iconic sites in Rome, and perhaps the world. Originally built in 70-80 AD, it was originally used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles, such as animal hunts and re-enactments of famous battles. Today, it is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Rome. With a capacity of 50,000 occupants, the Colosseum has been the backdrop of many historical moments, from the martyrdom of early Christians to the coronation of Napoleon as Emperor of France. The Colosseum features three stories of arches, with the lower two comprising the seating and the top taking the form of a attic covered in Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian columns. Numerous statues and inscriptions still remain within the Colosseum, taking visitors back in time. It is truly a must-visit destination in Rome!
