📍 From Tower, Germany
Cologne Cathedral, or Kölner Dom, rises beside Köln Hauptbahnhof near the Rhine, its twin spires defining the city’s skyline and forming a dramatic counterpoint to the Hohenzollern Bridge. Construction began in 1248 to house the Shrine of the Three Kings, but the vast Gothic church remained unfinished for centuries before completion in 1880 according to medieval plans. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is distinguished by an immense west façade crowded with tracery, portals and sculpture, while the dark stone exterior records generations of weathering and urban pollution. Wide views from Roncalliplatz emphasize the building’s vertical scale; across the Rhine, the cathedral appears layered with the bridge, railway traffic and city lights. Inside, soaring columns, medieval stained glass and the vividly colored modern window by Gerhard Richter create sharply different patterns of light.
