Col de Tentes
📍 France
A high mountain pass above the village of Gavarnie-Gèdre, Col de Tentes is a key access point into the central Pyrenees and a dramatic viewing platform for the Cirque de Gavarnie and the Vignemale massif. Important to walkers and mountain guides rather than motorists, the pass sits on classic high-route itineraries (local variant routes of the GR footpaths) and functions as a natural gateway between the French side and the Spanish valleys beyond. Hikers use it to gain altitude quickly for traverses, glacier approaches and panoramic ridge walks.

Historically the col served as a shepherd and mule track linking seasonal pastures and small frontier communities; a handful of old stone cairns and boundary markers still recall transhumance and occasional customs patrols. Architecturally minimal — the site’s interest is geological and topographical — but nearby refuges and rustic stone waymarks reflect traditional mountain construction. Unique local notes: from Col de Tentes you get one of the clearest, close-up perspectives on the Cirque’s amphitheatre and the spires of the Gavarnie–Gèdre sector, and in summer it is often included in guided glacier-aware outings to the Vignemale area. Snow lingers into late spring; some passages require crampons or rope use depending on conditions.
