📍 United Kingdom
Opened in 1873, Cleethorpes Pier is a Victorian pleasure pier on the town’s central seafront in North East Lincolnshire, near the mouth of the Humber Estuary. Its present, compact form reflects the removal of a section during the Second World War, leaving it much shorter than the original structure. The pavilion gives the pier its recognizable profile, while rows of supports connect it visually to the gently shelving beach below. The changing tide transforms this setting: low water exposes broad stretches of sand around the pier, while high water brings the estuary beneath its deck. From the beach, the pavilion and repeating supports stand out against the wide, level horizon, with wet sand sometimes adding reflections beneath them.
