The Romanesque Cloister of Santo Domingo de Silos presents an outstanding testimony to the creative genius of Iberian Romanesque art. The cloister is the highlight of the 10th century basilica built in what was once known as the Benedictine Abbey of Santo Domingo de Silos. Its artistry and harmonious structure is a magnificent specification of the first half of the 12th century. The three-aisled basilica still stands as a testament to its splendour. The cloister is composed of 12 arches with three pairs of columns each and is set around a small garden, adorned with beautiful Romanesque capitals. The walls of the cloister are also full of fascinating sculptures of animals and human figures, which are a reminder of the spiritual heritage of the monastery. The cloister provides a wonderful setting to admire the beauty of the ancient craftsmanship. Defying the passage of time, it continues to remain one of the most impressive monuments of Iberian Romanesque architecture.
