In the year of 1462, a small Portuguese village became the first settlement in the colonies of the new world. The village was called Cidade Velha, located in the small West African island of Santiago in the country of Cape Verde. Today, this settlement is a UNESCO World Heritage site, with its old cobbled streets, colorful colonial buildings, and old fortifications. Its chief landmark is the Gothic Church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário, the oldest colonial church in the tropics. One can explore the beautiful outdoor market, and visit the local archaeological museum which holds many important artifacts. Not to miss is a visit to the former Royal Square which still stands as a testimony of the Portuguese colonization period. One must keep an eye out for the striking wall paintings and street art in the village, which encompass the vibrant culture of the region. Cidade Velha is also a popular base for day-trips through the surrounding National Parks and nature reserves of Santiago Island.
