The Church of the Society of Jesus stands on Cusco’s Plaza de Armas, where its twin towers and richly carved Baroque façade form a distinctive part of the square’s skyline. Built on the site of an Inca palace complex known as Amarucancha, the Jesuit church makes the city’s layered history visible in one place. From across the plaza, its symmetrical stone front stands out against the surrounding arcades and Andean hills; inside, a gilded altarpiece carries the ornamentation into the sanctuary.
