The Church of the Holy Trinity in Saccargia (Chiesa di Santa Trinità di Saccargia), set in the flat rice-fields near Codrongianos in northern Sardinia, is one of the island’s finest examples of Pisan-Romanesque architecture and a powerful visual landmark thanks to its stark black-and-white banded masonry. Built in the 12th century during the Giudicato era, the church served as a monastic chapel and a rural parish; its history reflects Sardinia’s medieval ties to Pisa and the island’s unique political-religious landscape.
Architecturally it is notable for the alternating layers of local basalt and pale limestone, a tripartite façade with blind arcades, and a tall, square bell tower that punctuates the flat surrounding plain. The interior follows a basilica plan with a nave and two aisles separated by sturdy columns and rounded arches; fragments of medieval fresco decoration remain, offering rare insight into island painting of the period. Surrounding agricultural marshland and an adjacent small complex of ancillary buildings evoke the church’s monastic past.
