The Lalibela region of Ethiopia is home to the rock-hewn churches of St. George and the Eleven Saints. The Church of St. George, also sometimes referred to as the Church of the Redeemer, is one of the most impressive and monumental of the twelve churches carved from solid rock in the 12th century. While the exterior of this monolithic structure is most impressive, the jewel of the church lies within - the interior is decorated with colorful paintings and detailed carvings, depicting Biblical stories. Next to the Church of St. George is a traditional Ethiopian-style cross, hewn from rock and standing 13 meters tall. This monument is considered to be the largest monolithic cross in the world. The rock-hewn churches of Lalibela are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an incredibly inspiring place to visit for travelers and photographers.
