Church of St. Casimir
📍 Lithuania
The Church of St. Casimir in Vilnius is an early-17th-century Baroque landmark dedicated to Lithuania’s patron saint, St. Casimir. It is important as one of the city’s earliest Baroque churches and as a focal point of Catholic devotion and cultural life in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Built in the early 1600s by the Jesuit order, its establishment marked the Counter-Reformation’s architectural and spiritual presence in Vilnius.

Architecturally the church presents a restrained Baroque exterior and a richly decorated interior: high vaulted nave, side chapels, and an ornate main altar featuring sculptural and painted devotional imagery. The church historically housed important altarpieces and relics associated with St. Casimir and served as a burial site for notable local figures; a crypt beneath contains historic burials. Its bell tower and façadal rhythm reflect Western European Baroque influences adapted to the Lithuanian context. Uniquely, the church anchors annual liturgical celebrations for St. Casimir (early March), attracting pilgrims and special services that highlight its continuing religious and cultural role. Its proximity to Vilnius’ historic center makes it a key element in the city’s ecclesiastical and architectural ensemble.
