Church of Saksun
📍 From Drone, Faroe Islands
Saksun Church stands above a tidal lagoon in the village of Saksun on Streymoy, the largest of the Faroe Islands. Relocated from Tjørnuvík in 1858 and rebuilt here, it connects the histories of two small Faroese communities. Its whitewashed stone walls and turf-covered roof form a distinctive contrast with the dark water, sandy shore and steep green mountainsides. In wider views, the modest building gives scale to the enclosing valley, while the changing tide alters the balance of water and exposed sand beneath it.
