At the center of San Candido (Innichen), in South Tyrol’s upper Puster Valley, the Church of Saints Candidus and Corbinian is the town’s historic collegiate church. Its origins are linked to the monastery founded in the 8th century by Bavarian duke Tassilo III, while the present building is predominantly Romanesque, shaped during the 12th and 13th centuries. The compact stone mass, rounded apse and tall square bell tower create a fortress-like Alpine silhouette. Inside, the crypt, heavy arches and medieval painting preserve the church’s austere character; the dome fresco depicting scenes from Creation is especially notable. From outside, village roofs and the surrounding mountain walls frame the church, while the interior offers strong contrasts between pale stone, shadowed vaults and painted detail.
