Chiesa di Santa Maria degli Angeli (also known locally as San Francesco di Paola) is a compact Baroque church set within Lecce’s historic centre, its exterior carved from the honey-coloured “pietra leccese” that defines the city’s façades. The building rewards close-looking: dense vegetal scrolls, small angelic figures and finely modelled bas-reliefs create a tactile, lace-like surface that catches raking light. Photographs work well at low sun angles to emphasize shadows in the shallow relief; intimate detail shots highlight chisel marks and weathering while wider frames show the church’s scale against neighbouring palazzi. It remains an active place of worship; be mindful of services when planning a shoot.
