Chiesa di Santa Caterina is an 18th-century Baroque church in the southwestern part of Lucca’s walled historic centre, near the former tobacco factory. Its local nickname, the “church of the cigar makers,” recalls the women who worked at the factory and came here to pray. The compact oval interior contrasts with its elaborate decoration: stucco, frescoes and illusionistic painted architecture turn the ceiling into a theatrical vision of space opening overhead. Looking upward reveals the interplay between real architectural details and painted perspectives, the church’s most distinctive visual feature.
