Chiesa di San Michele in Foro stands in Piazza San Michele, on the site of Lucca’s ancient Roman forum; its name preserves that connection to the city’s civic heart. The medieval church is a striking example of Tuscan Romanesque architecture, with a marble façade rising above the roofline of the building behind it. Stacked tiers of open arcades are supported by columns with varied shapes and carved decoration, creating an intricate rhythm of light and shadow. At the summit, a large figure of the Archangel Michael stands over a dragon, making the church recognizable across the square. A frontal view emphasizes the façade’s symmetry, while an oblique angle reveals the contrast between this elaborate screen and the simpler body of the church.
