Chiesa di San Martino stands in the historic center of Monte San Martino, a compact hill town in the Marche countryside of Macerata province. The church is especially notable for preserving the Monte San Martino Polyptych, a late-15th-century altarpiece signed by the Venetian brothers Carlo and Vittore Crivelli. Its gilded framework, richly patterned fabrics, sculptural fruit and intense saintly figures reward close viewing, while the dark interior makes the gold leaf and saturated colors appear particularly luminous. The contrast between the church’s restrained setting and the intricate Renaissance painting gives the interior its strongest visual character.
