📍 From Inside, Switzerland
The Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista stands in Mogno, a mountain village in the municipality of Lavizzara, in Ticino’s upper Maggia Valley. Designed by Swiss architect Mario Botta and completed in 1996, it replaced a church destroyed by an avalanche in 1986. Its compact, elliptical form is wrapped in alternating bands of white marble and dark granite, giving the building a strong geometric presence among traditional village buildings and Alpine slopes. A sloping glass roof brings daylight into the interior from above rather than through conventional side windows, revealing the striped masonry and curved walls. Outside, the diagonal roofline contrasts with the horizontal stone bands; wider views place this contemporary sacred building within the rugged landscape that shaped its history.
