Chiesa di San Domenico stands on Piazza Rinascimento in Urbino’s historic center, directly across from the Palazzo Ducale. Founded for the Dominican order in the 14th century, the church is most distinctive for its Renaissance entrance: an ornate travertine portal by Maso di Bartolomeo set into a restrained brick façade. Above it, a glazed terracotta lunette shows the Madonna and Child with Dominican saints; the original by Luca della Robbia is preserved in the Palazzo Ducale, while a copy occupies the portal. This contrast of warm masonry, pale carved stone and blue-and-white ceramic gives the façade its photographic character, especially when framed with the square’s Egyptian obelisk and the palace architecture opposite.
