Chiemsee is often referred to as the Bavarian Sea, located in the southeastern corner of Bavaria, Germany. The scenery here is breathtaking with crystal clear blue waters and rolling green hills. There are three main islands located in Chiemsee – Herreninsel the larger of the three, Fraueninsel, and the uninhabited Krautinsel which can be seen from the lake. On the Herreninsel, visitors will find the Herrenchiemsee Palace, a majestic building whose architecture and interior design was inspired by the Palace of Versailles. The palace also contains the Hall of Mirrors and a grand church, both of which are impressive sites. The Fraueninsel, the second largest of the islands, is one of the oldest monasteries in Bavaria and is home to several churches, chapels and the Benedictine Convent. Visitors can take a cruise around the lake or explore the islands by boat or on foot. Boat trips from Übersee on the lake to the Fraueninsel are available. There are also many other activities that can be enjoyed in the area including bike rides around the lake, swimming, sailing and there is even a diving platform. Besides the lake, other attractions in the area include the beautiful Bavarian Alps, a number of castles and quaint villages. With its stunning scenery, Chiemsee is a great place to visit for travelers and photographers alike.
