Chicago Skyline
📍 From Art Institute of Chicago (Modern Wing), United States
Chicago’s skyline rises around the Loop and extends north along Lake Michigan, reflecting the city’s central role in the development of the modern skyscraper. Its architectural variety ranges from the white terra-cotta clock tower of the Wrigley Building and the Gothic detailing of Tribune Tower to glass high-rises along the Chicago River. Willis Tower is recognizable by its dark, bundled form and twin antennas, while 875 North Michigan Avenue, formerly the John Hancock Center, has tapering sides and prominent exterior X-bracing. From the Adler Planetarium on the Museum Campus, the lake provides an open foreground to a broad view of downtown, making the contrast between the waterfront and the dense vertical city especially clear. Along the river, bridges, passing boats, and reflections reveal the skyline at a more intimate scale.
