📍 From Inside, United Kingdom
Chetham's Library in Greater Manchester, United Kingdom, is a literary and historical marvel. Founded in 1653, it is the oldest public library in the English-speaking world. This unique building is packed with history and contains a large collection of rare books, manuscripts and letters, some dating back to the 14th century. The library is open to the public to explore its many treasures, as well as its buildings which have barely altered since Medieval times. Visitors can view the Gutenberg Bible, a 17th-century organ, and the so-called Bolton Chair, which supposedly belonged to Oliver Cromwell. Chetham's Library has also been the setting for many literary greats, such as Karl Marx and modern writers such as Jeanette Winterson. The library offers guided tours, events, and activities centered on its collections and history.
