📍 India
Chaumukha Jain Temple is the principal shrine of the Ranakpur temple complex, set in a wooded valley of Rajasthan’s Aravalli Hills. Built in the 15th century and dedicated to Adinatha, the first Jain Tirthankara, it takes its name from its four-faced plan, with entrances oriented toward the cardinal directions. The vast pale-marble interior is renowned for 1,444 intricately carved pillars, arranged beneath tiered domes and ceilings covered with geometric and floral ornament; no two columns are considered exactly alike. For photography, the most distinctive scene is the layered “forest” of pillars, where shafts of daylight create shifting patterns of brightness, shadow, symmetry, and depth. As this remains an active Jain place of worship, visitors should observe posted rules and treat prayer areas respectfully.
