📍 United States
Chattanooga National Cemetery occupies rolling ground just southeast of downtown Chattanooga, linking the modern city to the Civil War campaigns fought across nearby Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, and Lookout Mountain. Established in 1863, it became a burial place for Union soldiers killed in the region and later for veterans of other conflicts. Rows of white headstones curve with the terrain beneath mature trees, creating strong patterns of repetition, scale, and shadow. A distinctive monument honors Andrews’ Raiders of the Great Locomotive Chase, several of whom are buried here, and is topped by a bronze model of the locomotive General. As an active national cemetery, the grounds call for quiet, respectful photography, especially around burials and memorial ceremonies.
