Château du Clos de Vougeot stands within the stone walls of the Clos de Vougeot vineyard in Burgundy’s Côte de Nuits, between Dijon and Beaune. Cistercian monks from nearby Cîteaux Abbey established the wine estate in the 12th century, creating cellars, a vat house and massive wooden presses; the Renaissance château was added later. Today it is the headquarters of the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin, a brotherhood devoted to Burgundian wine and gastronomy. Pale limestone façades, steep tiled roofs and the enclosed courtyard contrast with the disciplined rows of vines outside, while views across the clos reveal how architecture, monastic history and Burgundy’s vineyard landscape are inseparably linked.
