Château de Tanlay is a moated Renaissance château in the village of Tanlay, near Tonnerre in Burgundy’s Yonne department. Built mainly in the 16th and 17th centuries, it is closely associated with the Coligny family and the religious conflicts that divided France during the Renaissance. Pale stone façades, steep slate roofs and round corner towers give the residence its recognizable silhouette, with reflections in the surrounding water emphasizing its scale and geometry. The smaller entrance château frames the approach to the main residence, creating a layered view through the courtyards. Inside, the trompe-l’œil gallery uses painted architectural decoration to suggest three-dimensional relief, while the frescoes in the Tour de la Ligue add another distinctive expression of the château’s Renaissance culture.
