The château was built by Philippe de Rabutin, whose ancestor, the brilliant 17th-century courtier, Philippe de Rabutin-Chantal was immortalized by Madame de Sévigné in her correspondence. The Château de Bussy-Rabutin is remarkable for the classical architecture of the main building and its five two-story outbuildings arranged around the courtyard. The main façade of the building is decorated with a pediment and balcony, and the central part has been made into a belvedere with many windows. The other façades are adorned with arcades and a large loggia. The interior of the château contains a superb collection of 18th-century furniture, sculptures, and old paintings. The gardens at the Château de Bussy-Rabutin are among the most beautiful in France, with ponds, fountains, sculptures, and well-landscaped lawns. There is also an Italian-style garden and a fishing pond.
