Château Comtal is one of the most spectacular medieval castles in Europe. It was built in the 12th century by the counts of Trencavel and built upon pre-existing Roman fortifications which make up the city walls of Carcassonne. The castle is one of the best preserved medieval fortifications in the world and features two drawbridges, a gatehouse, a keep fortified by two huge towers, and an inner ward. Visitors to the castle can explore the ramparts, towers, courtyards and chambers which house a museum displaying artifacts from the ramparts and towers. Apart from the ruins, the castle offers fantastic views of the old city and the Pyrenees Mountains. A must-see while in Carcassonne.
