Chapelle Saint-Nicolas stands on a pier of Avignon’s Pont Saint-Bénézet, the celebrated medieval bridge extending into the Rhône from the walled city. The structure comprises two superimposed chapels: the upper chapel dedicated to Saint Nicholas, patron of Rhône boatmen, and the lower chapel associated with Saint Bénézet, whose story is inseparable from the bridge’s foundation. Its compact Romanesque forms emphasize the scale and exposed position of the surviving bridge arches. From the riverbanks, the chapel creates the bridge’s most distinctive vertical accent, especially when viewed against the stone ramparts, Rocher des Doms, and Palais des Papes; changing Rhône levels and light often add reflections and strong contrasts between pale masonry and water.
