Chafariz do Carmo is the monumental stone fountain at the heart of Largo do Carmo, a historic square in Lisbon’s Chiado area beside the ruined Gothic church of the Carmo convent. Built in the 18th century, it formed part of the city’s public water network supplied by the Águas Livres Aqueduct, combining an everyday civic function with an elaborate architectural presence. Its arched canopy gives the fountain the appearance of a small pavilion, with deep shadows beneath the pale stonework. The surrounding façades and the convent’s pointed church portal place its classical forms in a distinctly layered Lisbon setting. In late spring, the square’s flowering jacarandas introduce violet color around the stone monument.
