The Church of the Resurrection of Christ, better known as the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood, stands beside the Griboyedov Canal in central St. Petersburg. Built as a memorial to Emperor Alexander II at the site of his assassination in 1881, it links one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks to a turning point in Russian imperial history. Its Russian Revival architecture, inspired by medieval Russian churches, contrasts with the Baroque and Neoclassical buildings that shape much of the historic center. Patterned onion domes, ornamental brickwork and exterior mosaics create a densely layered composition of color and texture. Views along the canal emphasize the domes rising above the embankment, while the interior offers a different visual experience: extensive biblical mosaics covering the walls, pillars and vaults.
