Centro Storico is the compact, whitewashed heart of Cisternino, a hilltown set in Puglia’s Valle d’Itria. Its maze of narrow alleys, stepped lanes and arched passages clusters around a small central piazza and the town’s stone houses, creating intimate compositions of limewashed walls, carved doorways and decorative chimneys. The district’s visual appeal comes from textured tufa, wrought-iron balconies, hanging pots and sudden openings that frame the patchwork of olive groves and conical trulli in the valley below. Photographers will find strong contrasts of sun and shade, tight geometries and recurring motifs—arches, stair flights and laundry—that reward close details and occasional wide panoramas from the town’s belvederes. Local butcher shops known for in‑place grilling animate certain evenings, adding human scale and warm tones to street scenes.
