📍 Canada
The Centennial Flame stands on Parliament Hill, aligned with the Centre Block and Peace Tower in the heart of Ottawa. Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson lit it on January 1, 1967, to mark the centennial of Canadian Confederation. Its circular fountain displays the shields of Canada’s provinces and territories, accompanied by the dates each entered Confederation; Nunavut’s emblem was added after the territory’s creation. The contrast of fire, flowing water and carved stone makes the monument distinctive, while a north-facing composition places the Gothic Revival Parliament buildings behind it. Coins tossed into the fountain support an award for Canadians with disabilities conducting research on disability issues.
