Cementiri de Barcelona refers to the city’s network of burial grounds — most notably Cementiri del Poblenou (the old Eastern Cemetery) and Cementiri de Montjuïc — that together form one of Barcelona’s largest open-air museums of funerary art and urban memory. These cemeteries matter for their concentration of 19th–20th century social history: responses to epidemics, the shift of burials beyond medieval walls, and the city’s industrial and maritime expansion. Architecturally they display a rich vocabulary of pantheons, neo-classical chapels, Art Nouveau and Modernisme tombs, cast-iron columbaria and sculptural ensembles by leading Catalan artists; Montjuïc’s terraced layout on the hill creates dramatic sightlines over the harbor and organizes military, civil and republican memorials. Historically relevant layers include Civil War graves, Republican mausoleums and monuments to sailors and industrialists, making the sites documentary as well as artistic. Unique visitor features: curated routes highlighting Modernisme funerary works, signature family pantheons of local elites, and concentrated sculptural programs seldom seen elsewhere — a specialist’s destination for funerary art, history and urban iconography.
