📍 Türkiye
Çavuşin Kalesi rises above Çavuşin village in the Avanos district, between Avanos and Göreme in the heart of Cappadocia. Rather than a conventional masonry fortress, it is a steep mass of volcanic tuff shaped by erosion and hollowed into a dense rock-cut settlement, with chambers, passages and façades reflecting centuries of domestic and religious use. Rows of dark openings give the weathered cliff its distinctive honeycombed appearance, while elevated sections overlook village roofs, pale ridges and the surrounding fairy-chimney landscape. Low, warm light brings out the ochre stone, deep cavities and rough textures; from below, the houses at the cliff’s foot provide a strong sense of scale and show how closely the settlement was integrated with the rock.
