📍 Italy
Cava di Bauxite is a disused open-cast mine near Otranto, on the Adriatic side of Salento in the Province of Lecce. Once worked for bauxite, the ore used to produce aluminium, its excavated basin now holds a small emerald-green lake fed by groundwater. Iron-rich, rust-red earth forms steep banks around the water, contrasting with the surrounding Mediterranean scrub. This red-and-green palette is the site’s defining visual feature: views from the rim reveal the pool enclosed by exposed, eroded slopes. Despite its natural-looking colors, the hollow is a legacy of mining, with vegetation gradually reclaiming the disturbed ground.
