Urbino’s Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta stands beside the Palazzo Ducale in the historic center, linking the city’s religious and ducal identities. Although the cathedral has medieval origins and was reshaped during the Renaissance, its present appearance is largely Neoclassical, following reconstruction after the 1789 earthquake under architect Giuseppe Valadier. The pale, orderly façade, with its columns, statues and triangular pediment, contrasts with the brick fabric of Urbino and the more elaborate Renaissance palace nearby. Inside, a bright three-aisled plan leads toward the dome and high altar, while paintings by Federico Barocci connect the church to Urbino’s artistic heritage. From the piazza, the façade is especially recognizable as part of an architectural ensemble with the Palazzo Ducale.
