Cagliari’s Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and Santa Cecilia stands on Piazza Palazzo in Castello, the fortified hill district above the city. Founded under Pisan rule in the 13th century, it combines medieval fabric with later Gothic and richly Baroque alterations; its present striped, arcaded façade revives the Pisan Romanesque style. Inside, polychrome marble, painted vaults and a raised presbytery create a dense ceremonial setting. Particularly significant are the sculpted sections of a 12th-century marble pulpit by Maestro Guglielmo, transferred from Pisa Cathedral, and the crypt-like Sanctuary of the Martyrs beneath the presbytery. From the compact piazza, the façade’s geometric bands and the adjoining medieval bell tower form the cathedral’s most recognizable composition.
