Cattedrale di San Lorenzo is Perugia’s cathedral, anchoring Piazza IV Novembre alongside the Fontana Maggiore and Palazzo dei Priori. Unusually, its long flank faces this central square, while the main façade looks onto Piazza Danti. Built largely in the 14th and 15th centuries, the church has an unfinished exterior where pink-and-white geometric stonework contrasts with broad expanses of exposed masonry. Inside, octagonal pillars divide three aisles of similar height, creating a spacious Gothic hall beneath richly decorated vaults. The cathedral also houses the Santo Anello, a ring venerated as the Virgin Mary’s wedding ring. From Piazza IV Novembre, the carved fountain, cathedral steps and patterned lower wall form a layered composition that brings together Perugia’s religious and civic identities.
