The Cattedrale di Maria Santissima Assunta anchors Lecce’s intimate Piazza del Duomo as the city’s cathedral and the seat of the archbishop. Largely rebuilt in the 17th century in the exuberant local Baroque, much of its sculptural ornamentation is carved from the honey-colored pietra leccese by masters including Giuseppe Zimbalo; deep reliefs, putti and fluted columns create rich shadow and texture across the façade. A slender campanile punctuates the skyline behind the square, giving strong vertical contrast to the cathedral’s balanced frontage. For photography note the warm stone that picks up side light and the compact square which allows for layered compositions of façade, tower and human scale. As an active church, respectful dress and quiet are appropriate.
