Cattedrale di Fermo, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin, crowns Girfalco hill at the highest point of Fermo’s historic center in the Marche. Its pale stone Gothic façade, with a deeply recessed portal, large rose window and adjoining bell tower, survives from the medieval church, while the spacious interior largely reflects an eighteenth-century rebuilding in a restrained Neoclassical style. Archaeological remains beneath the cathedral include traces of an early Christian basilica and mosaic flooring, revealing the site’s long religious continuity. The broad forecourt emphasizes the building’s hilltop scale, and nearby viewpoints open across Fermo’s tiled roofs and the rolling landscape between the Sibillini Mountains and the Adriatic coast.
