Cathedral Rock
📍 United States
Cathedral Rock is a red sandstone formation south of central Sedona, Arizona, within Coconino National Forest. Its clustered towers and high saddle create a cathedral-like silhouette, one of the distinctive shapes of Sedona’s red-rock landscape. Iron oxides give the layered stone its red and orange colors, while erosion has sculpted its sheer walls and pinnacles. From Red Rock Crossing along Oak Creek, the formation rises beyond riverside cottonwoods and can appear reflected in calmer stretches of water. Afternoon light illuminates its west-facing surfaces, revealing the contrast between sunlit sandstone, deep clefts, and the green creek corridor below.
